This Surprisingly Good Conditioner Bar for Curly Hair

For the most part of my life, as a Black woman, I have been directly harmed by the haircare business (I even had to go to a different town to purchase products—how exciting!). When it comes to the products I use on my hair, particularly conditioners, I’m fairly choosy.

Because of my thick and curly hair, I need something that will really work and finish the job. Unfortunately, not every product works for me; to far, I’ve tried hundreds.

While some conditioners are very hydrating, they are too thick to aid in detangling. Some work well at untangling hair, but they fall short in terms of nourishing and softening my hair. Then there are those, like conditioner bars, that I never even bother with.

Everything about “it’s waterless and uses no plastic” makes sense to me. But it’s difficult for me to believe that anything that resembles a bar of soap can really do anything for my thick hair after years of mental hair damage. However, I had to swiftly stop up after trying Good Juju’s Conditioner Bar for Dry/Curly Hair after much persuasion.

The Conditioner Bar works on damp hair in a similar manner as conventional conditioners. But you just rub the bar on your damp hair rather than putting a handful in your hands and rubbing it through your strands. At first, I wasn’t aware of how helpful this would be, but it’s good to know that I can ensure that the formula fills every space.

It goes without saying that detangling was a snap with ingredients like coconut, avocado, olive, and sacha inchi oils, along with shea and coco butters; once I washed it out, my hair felt wonderful and smooth. In addition, the fragrance—a combination of patchouli and sweet orange—is energizing and fresh, just what I need to get through the last of my hair twisting at 11 p.m. and watch another episode of The Real Housewives.

I can’t speak for every conditioner bar on the market, but if you’re like me and frightened of them, this one from Good Juju is definitely worth a try. Read more
